Name of the Food Joint – Jamie’s Pizzeria by Jamie Oliver
Location – 3rd Floor, Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, India
I was called to taste and review the exclusive menu at the Jamie’s Pizzeria by Jamie Oliver recently opened at Ambience Mall, Gurgaon. Well, after hearing the name of Jamie Oliver, one of the world renowned Chef and book author, I was thrilled with excitement to taste his inventions. This Pizzeria is Jamie’s debut in India, though he already has 63 restaurants operating in 11 countries. British chef, Jamie Oliver was always concerned about health and nutrition factor. I believe that with 4.85 million followers on Twitter, Jamie is very much a chef who cares. Because of an exclusive invite, I was able to taste almost everything in the menu.
I went to Jamie’s Pizzeria by Jamie Oliver with a sheer expectation to taste some flavors of Pizza that are purely Italian, unlike ones at Pizza Hut and Dominoes. Yes, after tasting the menu I would love to announce that the food definitely differs in flavors from the others. Some pizza’s in the menu like the Basil Pollo (might not be loved by Indian taste buds) and White Rocket has some unique flavors that were not experienced by me before this.
The best part about the Pizza’s was the freshly made base stretched out of dough that is made on a daily basis inside the Pizzeria. But, somehow the base becomes hard to eat if not gulped quickly. The menu is a blend of traditional best-selling Italian dishes and some more contemporary dishes with a Jamie and Gennaro twist. I would say very close to the authentic Italian Pizza but still needs improvement to match the one I had in Naples, Italy, last time. The Stargazy pizza at Jamie’s was an absolute pleasure as the combination of capers and tiger prawns worked well – but some generosity in the quantity of tiger prawns will be appreciated! People who want to have that same cheesy typical Indian Italian will not like the food for sure.
Ambience – 4.2/5
The rustic doors and beautiful calligraphy on the walls gives the Pizzeria a very lively look. The stony front and not so bright lighting creates a warm environment perfect for a casual dining. The 60 seater Pizzeria is definitely cozy and subtle, where pastel blue, grey and rustic brown are pre-dominant colors. Large chalkboards with messages and highlights of the menu (including some written in Hindi), plus photo frames with pictures of Jamie embellish the first half the restaurant, while wooden panels (vintage, unpolished village doors from India) are used cleverly to divide the pizzeria into two sections. The second half has a large grey staccato wall that was given to local artists who used crayons to produce a collage with highlights of Delhi NCR. (It is indeed a great work of art, must see!) How can one forget to mention the open kitchen that enables you to witness the making of hand stretched pizzas’. Delight to eyes!
Food – 4/5
I started with the Hand-stretched garlic bread with rosemary and an olive tapenade, and a fritto misto that had a selection of prawn, squid and season fish fried in a crispy batter with chunky Italian tartare sauce. Garlic bread gave a very different flavor than usual but somehow it tasted like a real time Garlic ‘naan’ to me. I loved the Okra Fritti and Fritto Misto (Prawns) in starters. The pizzas (11 inch, and hand-stretched, not tossed) were really delicious and for me they weren’t crammed with toppings the way we’ve grown to expect, and there was just the right balance of cheese to sauce so you didn’t feel full for the next half day. The Jamie’s Delhi Hot Pizza was exceptional which contained secret chilli freak sauce mixed with Passata. This, topped with crushed tomatoes, mutton meatballs, mozzarella and chilli gave it a must try taste. I was personally very impressed by Paneer Piccante (spicy paneer, roasted bell peppers, with mozarella cheese).
Drinks on the menu complemented the pizzas. They don’t have a liquor license yet, but the Iced tea went delightfully well. Desserts were simple but really delicious, Tiramisu and Epic Chocolate Brownie are heavenly.
Service – 3.8/5
The attitude of the staff gives you a very happy and homely vibe. Though, the service is a bit slow! Staff could be your great help to decide the best pizza for you… If going for the first time. It’s not a fine dining restaurant. It does not pretend to be one.
Price – 3.9/5
Reasonable! They’ve kept the prices incredibly low; pizzas range between Rs 199 to Rs 449, appetisers between Rs 129 to Rs 249, and salads & sides between Rs 119 to Rs 149.
HTMTNT Overall Rating – 4/5
Must Try –
Okra Fritti, Fritto Misto, Funghi Woodman, Paneer Piccante, Stargazy, Tiramisu and Epic Chocolate Brownie
Will I go Here Again?
Yes, will definitely go back sometime for a quick meal over a lovely conversation. Jamie’s Pizzeria is a happy place for pizza lovers like me, who do not compromise on quality, taste & price.
